How I customized a phone holder for my Permobil F5 power wheelchair

You know what’s a question you hear a lot when wheelchair users talk? “Where I can get a phone mount that actually fits my chair?”

And here’s the thing—there are a million different wheelchair models out there, right? So of course, there are also a million phone mounts. But when I say “phone mounts,” I mean the kind made for cars, bikes, or motorcycles.

A regular person would be shocked to find out there are, like, maybe five phone holders in existence actually designed for wheelchairs. Sure, some “disability” mounts might kinda work, but for what I needed? They all had flaws. So I didn’t even bother with them.

The Plan

For a mount to work for me, it had to check a few boxes.

Same as that article where I turned a mic stand into a phone holder.

Here’s what I needed:

  • It had to clamp onto my chair fast.
  • Positioned just right for my arm.
  • Solid. No wobbling.
  • Black – nothing flashy.
  • Phone locked in tight so some jerk doesn’t swipe it on the street.
  • Not permanently stuck to the chair.
  • Easy to take off when I don’t need it.

After digging around, I found the one. Yeah, same model I picked for the mic stand project—just attaches differently.

The motorcycle mount

But to make it work, had to tweak a few things.

Making it fit

My Permobil F5’s got a standing function. Both armrests have these metal brackets—they’re for clipping in a chest strap so you don’t faceplant when standing.

Pics of the armrests from below, so you get what I’m talking about. That metal bracket? That’s where the phone holder’s going.

Sketch of the armrest mounting bracket, just to visualize it.

Problem? The bracket’s hole was bigger than the hole on the phone mount. Needed to match ‘em up so a bolt could slide through and tighten.

Fixed it with a 3D-printed adapter.

How it mounts: Slide the whole thing in from underneath, screw it down from the top. There’s a black rubber washer so it doesn’t spin around.

Security stuff

When I was figuring out where to mount my phone for easy access, my top priority was security. I needed to make sure nobody could just snatch it, and that it was locked in tight so it wouldn’t fall and get damaged.

If needed, I can rotate it slightly toward me to keep it less visible when I’m out.

Bottom line

This whole thing was built around the Permobil F5’s existing bracket – just repurposed.

That other bracket on the left side? Might add a 360° camera on it. Or something else. Who knows.
